5 Questions to Ask a Commercial Product Photographer

Hiring a commercial product photographer isn’t just about finding someone who can take a beautiful photo; it’s about finding someone who can create images that actually sell your product.

For CPG brands in food, beverage, and beauty, your visuals need to do a lot of heavy lifting. They need to stop the scroll, communicate your brand, and convert customers across ecommerce, retail, and advertising.

The wrong photographer might give you “pretty” images.

The right photographer gives you strategic, high-performing content.

Before you book your next shoot, here are five questions every brand should ask.

1. Do you shoot with a plan?

Not all product photography is created equal.

The food industry and the beauty industry require completely different approaches, from lighting and styling to how products are positioned and sold visually.

If a photographer has never shot snacks, beverages, or packaged goods, you might end up with images that look nice… but don’t actually convert.

Working with someone who understands your specific industry means:

  • they know how your product should look on shelf and online
  • they understand packaging challenges (like glare, condensation, texture)
  • they can create imagery that aligns with your customer expectations

Having an actual creative direction mapped out before shoot day is a must.

  • Shot list
  • Color palette
  • Styling notes

all approved before anything gets photographed. That’s what separates intentional imagery from a beautiful guess.

2. Do the photos work across ads, website and social?

Ask if the photos will work everywhere.

A successful shoot starts long before the camera comes out.

A strong photographer will take the time to understand your:

  • brand positioning
  • target audience
  • product goals
  • where the images will live (e-commerce, ads, social, retail)

A good photographer is already thinking about your website banner while they’re setting up the shot. Most of my images are composed with intentional negative space on at least one side – so you can extend them for an Instagram story or a web banner without cropping out the product.

That kind of planning happens before the shutter clicks, not in post. It also ensures that every image we create is aligned with your brand and working toward a specific goal.

Because at the end of the day:

4. Do they know CPG?

Not all product photography is the same. Consumer packaged goods (CPG) photography is its own specialty, and every category comes with unique challenges. Beverages need condensation, ice, pours, and lighting that makes liquids look refreshing. Snacks and baked goods require styling that makes texture and freshness stand out. Beauty products demand clean reflections, precise lighting, and attention to packaging details.

Ask potential photographers what types of CPG brands they’ve worked with. Have they photographed beverages, snacks, packaged foods, supplements, or beauty products before? Can they show examples from those categories?

A photographer who creates beautiful portraits or even great product photos for a single brand may not automatically know how to handle the specific demands of CPG. Different products require different styling techniques, prop selections, lighting setups, and post-production approaches. The photographer you choose should understand how consumers shop your category and how images need to perform across websites, social media, retail listings, and advertising campaigns.

The goal isn’t just creating a pretty photo, it’s creating imagery that helps sell your product. That’s why category-specific CPG experience matters.

3. Do I need to be onsite?

Ask what’s included in the fee. Basic internet licensing should come standard. Ask specifically about print and extended commercial licensing if you need them – and any photographer worth hiring will have a clear answer ready.

👉 Clear communication = better results.

5. What deliverables and usage rights are included?

This is one of the most overlooked — and most important — questions.

Before booking, make sure you understand:

  • how many final images you’ll receive
  • file formats and sizes
  • where you’re allowed to use the images (ads, packaging, website, etc.)
  • whether additional licensing is required

The goal is simple:

Ask what’s included in the fee. Basic internet licensing should come standard. Ask specifically about print and extended commercial licensing if you need them – and any photographer worth hiring will have a clear answer ready.

👉 No surprises later.

Hiring a commercial product photographer is an investment — and asking the right questions upfront can make all the difference.

When you work with a photographer who understands your industry, your brand, and your goals, you’re not just getting images…

You’re getting content that works for your business.
